joel's injuries: edition #4,971

our sweet, little joel seems to have a knack for having accidents. when he was 13 months old, he grabbed the just un-plugged curling iron and burned his hand pretty severely. a few months back, he climbed out of his pack 'n play when he was supposed to be napping and attempted to scale our dresser, toppling it over on himself. he got pretty lucky, though. it didn't land on him and he walked away with just a big scratch down his face. he still has the scar from the scratch, but i'm hoping it will fade with time, so he can be his usual, pretty self once again. these are just a couple of the more memorable injuries, but i have another to add to his repertoire. my family is hanging out at lake tahoe at the moment. the cabin we are staying in has this huge stone fireplace right in the middle of the family room... let me just interject to say that anyone who is contemplating putting one of these in the middle of the living area where there might be children running around... this is not an intelligent idea. when i first walked into the house, i remember looking at said fireplace and thinking, "that is an accident waiting to happen." sure enough, on monday morning, joel slipped on a toy boat that was laying precariously next to the stone fireplace and cut his lower lip open on the edge of the stone... sweet. ben held joel with ice on his lip and he cried for... a really long time. it bled for probably 45 minutes. yuck. i gave him some motrin and after he calmed down we put him to bed and he slept for like 4 1/2 hours! i guess he cried himself into a comatose state. i'm happy to report, though, that it's healing quite quickly and he seems to be his usual, charming self. i'm sure as you are reading this, you are probably thinking that maybe we are unfit parents and you are probably right... most of these accidents that have occurred could have been prevented by simple precautions. however, i think it's just in joel's blood to be accident prone. thanks ben. :)

here's my dad next to the fireplace of death.

so sad... still as cute as ever, even with a puffy lip though! :) be sure you watch him around gardening sheers... my accident prone brother snipped the skin between is thumb and index finger when he was little... consider yourself warned. :)

fireplace of death ... unfit parents ... oh my goodness you crack me up! I'm glad to hear that he's healing! Just for the record - we think you're amazing parents and we pray that our kids will be half as cute as yours!

Whitney, I feel you pain and Joel's. My peditrician said boys lead with their heads. My two boys have proved that theory over and over and over. Jeff has only been to the ER twice this year and Jack just added another goose egg to his forehead tonight. Good luck and regardless of how much you watch them . . . they will get hurt. It is their mission!

Awwww... poor Joel! He can join our "Club of Lip Injuries." I split my lip open in 4th grade (running around a desk), and my brother split his open in 2nd grade running around the woods at night with Cub Scouts. Then a couple years ago, Robert was initiated when a neighbor's dog bit half his lower lip off! (Thank goodness for amazing plastic surgeons!) Lip injuries tend to look hideous right after they happen, but they also usually heal quickly. Hopefully, Joel is looking back to his gorgeous self in a couple days. And I'm sure his injuries reflect his spirit and energy and NOT any parental weakness! Have fun in Tahoe!

poor little joely. hope he's feeling better. I did something similar when I was little, my brother pushed me into a couch and I split my lip open on a piece of metal sticking out. I had to get stitches, so when the doctor was sewing me up I bit down on his finger!! Ha ha, wasn't fun at the time but made for a pretty funny story.

Isn't it fun having boys! It seems like one of my boys always has a fat lip or big bruise somewhere! I hate seeing my kids get hurt though. It is the worst feeling.

Poor Joel! Troy is pretty accident-prone too, it you haven't heard all the stories, and his body is a walking trophy case of well loved accident memories. I bet Joel will love his too!

I can totally sympathize with this post! Our little Mason has constant bruises and scrapes all over his face. It's sad...but it's so hard to stop him, he's so full of energy! Good thing your kids are both so cute that the injuries only add to the cuteness! :)
