Legwarmers? For boys? Really?

This is Ben again.

So, I walked out of our room after putting some clothes away today and what to my wandering eyes should appear? My son...in legwarmers.

I inquired of Whitney whether or not this was some kind of joke. Maybe she was just putting them on him for giggles (remember the tutu post).

But no, my wife, bless her soul, actually bought the legwarmers with the idea that outfitting our little boy with these travesties-of-fashion-design-borne-from-the-80s are actually completely normal and ok for a little boy to wear.

Well, Whitney, I have two words for you: NOT OK.

Not even close.

Just to prove my point further I did a bit of image searching on Google. I searched for every conceivable phrase involving the words "legwarmers" and "men" or "boys" or even "babies." I DARE anyone reading this to find more than 3 or 4 photos of men, boys, or even baby boys that are actually wearing legwarmers. Most likely what you will all find are photos like this:

I couldn't even find a photo of Richard Simmons in legwarmers...at all.

This being said, it's time for all the people reading this to give their answer: Legwarmers for little boys - fashion victory or fashion faux pas?

Women, get your husbands involved. We don't want biased results now do we!

i don't know, ben. i don't have a baby boy, but i did find this site with tons of "baby boy legwarmers".

http://www.google.com/products?oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&q=baby+boy+leg+warmers&spell=1&oi=spell

looks pretty legit to me. :)

hmmmm. totally doesn't count. the pictures have to be just in the google image search results window. No exploring outside of this.

I totally just made this rule.

what does ryan think, eh?

I stand corrected everyone!

I just did a google image search for "legwarmers for baby boys" and there are a bunch of pics of little boys whose mothers made them wear the legwarmers.

Poor little guys, they don't even realize how ridiculous they look :)

OH no!!! I don't even have to ask my husband. Imagine what your son will think in 20 years when he looks at the picture. NO NO NO Whitney. I'm on team Ben here.

Connor does not hold his tongue when my boys have toe nail polish. I can't imiagine what he would say if I put leg warmers on!

I think Sean would freak if i put Harrison in some. I bet they keep his legs warm. But, they are not for this family. :)

I think they're cute! and "babylegs" are not the same as the leg warmers from the 80's!

Okay, fun answer from Molly: I totally put Graham in babylegs. Christian made fun of it all night, calling them legwarmers. I still like them especially since the cloth diapers are bulky and pants look funny over them. I want some with little skulls on them!

Opinionated answer from Molly: Are you worried your kids will end up gay if you put baby legs on them? If my kid likes pink, more power to him. I think guys need to worry less about trying to appear masculine. Really. It's all socialization. Your kid will turn out exactly how his personality is meant to turn out even if he wears babylegs.

I probably wouldn't do it myself, but I don't see too much harm in someone else's kid doing it! ;)

Ha ha. Cute either way.

Ben, Oliver is a one year old baby! He is not a teenager trying to look cool. So what if Whitney puts leg warmers on him? He looks adorable. And plus, I know for a fact that Oliver doesn't have very many comfortable pants at the moment. You know, being a large in the belly area and all. He probably loves being comfortable and warm. Let it go Ben, let it go.

Molly said...

Pssst--Whitney, I'll make you some manly babylegs your husband can handle. :)

Morgan said...

hmmm... well, he does look absolutely adorable in them, you really can't deny that. who can resist a chubby kid in tight baby legs? but, i don't think that nate would allow it. well, i should rephrase... i can put our kids in whatever i want because i am in charge in that area, but nate would definitely not appreciate it. he told me to tell you that he's with you.

This is Dave - NOT OK

Tiff said, "I guess...I don't know...well maybe...I don't know...I don't have a boy, I have a girl...I don't know." Since she is VERY undecided on the issue, I will commandeer her vote.

Tiff says NOT OK

ryan thinks richard simmons could have improved his look with a pair of babylegs.

i totally just made that up.

If they are on a boy the only purpose for leg warmers would be to hide some sort of weapon or to hold the spikes onto the legs when duct tape is not available for some sort of fight to the death...but they wouldn't be leg warmers probably something fashioned out of a potato sack or cowhide but definitely not leg warmers

I totally had to laugh at this post... because as I sit here typing this, BOTH my boys are wearing "leg-warmers." I made a ton of the baby-legs for my girls which they wear to church instead of tights, but then I made some neutral ones out of MENS dress socks, which my boys are currently wearing under their overalls. It makes diaper changes at the park much warmer, and here in Utah, you gotta layer. Plus, when their pants are too short for them, but still too big around the middle, it helps cover their poor little calves.

From Dave: As long as they're manly colors/patterns and as long as they're covered... they're totally fine.

Kelly says: ummmm....not so much my thing, although Oliver looks soooo adorably chubby-legged in them! AND he has not idea that hey are not the most "manly" accessory ever invented. He kinda looks like he just wants to chew on things here in these pics. Maybe this IS my thing??

Matt Says: NOT OK.

Sorry, Whit. I, a woman, don't even approve of legwarmers for boys, unless they are worn under snow pants for the sole purpose of keeping his little legs warm (but by the looks of Oliver's chubby legs, he won't be needing no leg warmers). So, I have to conlcude that I'm also on team Ben: leg warmers are out. You gotta draw the line somewhere, and I'd say legwarmers are waaaaaaaaaaay past the line!

Forrest said something I'll write as "Heck" No, and also "No way on God's Green Earth!" I agree.

how did i miss this post???

NOT OK from me and from my husband he would say "HECK NO" sorry Whit

I have to agree with Ben on this one...NOT OK. sorry Whitney. but I know all about not making pants to fit chubby babies in the waist area. Poor Mady has the same problem. Although her bum is ginormous as well. And her baby legs won't even stay on her thighs they are so big...they just roll down the chubby thighs :)

PS...we are coming to Sac this week and are trying to do a daytrip to SF on Friday. We'd love to see you guys!!
