terrified

yep, i'm freaking out. i started potty training joel today. i have no idea what i'm doing, but i'm doing it anyway.

he's running around naked right now... well, he actually has a shirt on, but no pants. i've heard that's the best crash course and usually really successful. he's sat on the potty a few times today already, but no action yet. i'll keep you posted... hopefully, with good news.

**update**

so today it went... okay. he had a couple of accidents, which i'm sure is totally normal for the first day. by the end of the day, he had gone pee in his potty at least 10 times, so i think he's getting the hang of it. i think he's scared to have an accident, though, so he spends long stretches of time sitting on his potty and wants me or ben to sit there with him. i seriously spent several cumulative hours sitting on a stool next to him, while he read and i read and he waited and i waited. i kept asking him if he wanted a break, but he wouldn't get up until he had gone. sweet kid. the first time he went in the potty, he was so excited. he started laughing and smiling immediately and said, "i get M&Ms!" all in all, a successful day, but we are totally EXHAUSTED!

Good luck! My nephew was motivated by potty treats. They would give him a couple of m&m's for peeing and a fruit snack for pooping. Go Joel!

Hey Whitney, it's been a long time! Your family is darling... it's great to see what you are up to! I bare bum trained my last one... unfortunately I didn't do that with my older ones, it was SO much better with the bare bum, worked like a charm!!! Keep up the good work!

I totally second the character underwear. I had some wonder woman panties that really revolutionized my use of the toilet.

High fives to Joelie for his success today. May the force be with you!!!

okay, i am an IDIOT. i have your blog link on my favorites sidebar and i check it regularly for updates. i hadn't seen an update since the lovely picture of you and ben by your christmas tree (yes, you read that right...CHRISTMAS) because the url address i saved was for that particular post not just your main blog url. really, maren. so dumb. so, i just spent the last few minutes browsing your many new blog posts since christmas and basically wet my pants of laughter.

speaking of wetting pants...hope joel is doing well! that's something i'm definitely NOT looking forward to.

Potty training is so hard. Austin went without pants when I potty trained him. It seemed to work the best. Joel seems to be doing well with it though, that's good. Keep up the good work! You'll be so glad when you don't have to deal with him in diapers anymore!

Hey Whitney, I don't know if you remember me, I replaced you at Fidelity Title back in Provo.... the good ol' days (yeah right!) I found your blog through Megi & Ty Jones. I'm glad to see you're doing so good and your little boys are absolutely beautiful!
I've got two little ones myself now. My daughter is 2 1/2 now and has been potty trained for several months. We found it worked best if for the first few days you set a timer (15 min the first day, 25 the next, 40 the next) and every time the timer goes off you get really excited about it and take them to the potty. Wait about 5 minutes and if they don't go then set the timer for a shorter amount. It took my daughter a day and a half and then it was over! Then I just had to remember to make sure to find the bathrooms as soon as we entered a store. Now she lasts about 1 1/2 hrs - 2 1/2 hrs and it's sooooo nice!
Well good luck! Potty training requires a ridiculous amount of patience!!

What a cute and good boy Joel is being! Where did you hear about the M&M thing? Is that Dr. Phil's trick? I hear that is a really good one. My sisters swear by it. Or you could just dehydrate him until he only has to pee 1 or 2 times a day. That seems easier.

Thank you for your support Whit! I really appreciate it. Getting back in shape is definitely overwhelming in the beginning, but I can do it!:)

You guys have been really busy! Good luck with the potty training. It seriously took us a whole year and Baylie still wears diapers at night. Whew~! Oh, and I loved your dinner menu. Now I don't feel so bad when we eat cereal for dinner when Ryan's gone.

How funny, I started Ashlyn today too. So we can check in on each other and give a lift on the hard days. We are doing a potty chart. She gets a sticker everytime she goes on the potty. WHen she is done with the chart she gets a new bike (something she really wants - for Dylan it was the cars movie) It worked great for Dylan, so i hope it will for Ashlyn. THe only thing about m&M's are that they might want to keep receiving them even after they are all trained. But at least it is just one. Just do what works for you and joel, that is all. THe naked things is great if they don't dirty on the floor!! You will feel like you have reached heaven when he is trained- it is the best feeling in the world.
